Students will read sections from the 14 booklets in The Truth About Drugs series in the lessons. Related vocabulary is defined as part of each lesson and a Glossary of Terms is provided at the back of this guide, which includes additional terms.

Each of the 13 booklets listed below focuses on one of the most commonly abused drugs-marijuana, alcohol, synthetic drugs, Ecstasy, cocaine, crack cocaine, crystal meth and methamphetamine, inhalants, heroin, LSD, prescription drug abuse, painkillers and Ritalin abuse. Included are compelling stories from former users.

Each student will receive a boxed set of all the booklets to use as they go through the lessons and is encouraged to read them as homework assignments.

No one questions the severity of the drug problem and its devastating impact on youth. Academic results suffer and, even worse, drugs undermine health and destroy young lives.

The best solution is to reach young people with effective, fact-based drug education-before they start on drugs. Tweens, teens and young adults who know the facts about drugs are much less likely to start using them.

Drawing on government reports and official studies, the Foundation for a Drug-Free World's research-based educational materials are specifically oriented to young people. This Educator's Guide fills the growing demand for a practical manual to help educators communicate the truth about drugs swiftly and effectively. It provides lessons, assignments and classroom activities that elicit student participation. The guide contains tools that capture and retain young people's attention. Students willingly read, view and, most importantly, use these tools to make right choices about drug use.

Hardly a teacher or parent exists who has not asked: What can I do to help keep kids off drugs? This guide and accompanying teaching aids help answer that question to the maximum benefit of students.

Nearly 200,000 in the world lose their lives to drugs every year, often as a result of overdose.

In the face of these statistics, drug education is clearly essential to keep schools and communities healthy and safe.

This Educator's Guide and its accompanying audiovisual aids and printed materials equip educators with effective teaching tools. Students gain a thorough understanding of the short-term and long-term health impact of the most commonly abused substances.

KNOW YOUR TRUTH ABOUT DRUGS EDUCATION PACKAGE

The audiovisual and printed teaching aids that accompany this guide are intended to be used in conjunction with The Truth About Drugs Lesson Plans.

Before starting, familiarize yourself with these tools. This will help you decide how best to incorporate them into your drug education classes.

Recommended sequence:

  1. Watch each of the 17 They Said/They Lied public service announcements (PSAs).
  2. Watch The Truth About Drugs documentary.
  3. Read The Truth About Drugs booklet and the 13 booklets about specific drugs.
  4. Review each "Teacher's Guide" and "Lesson Plan" in this guide (starting on page 21).

USE OF THE THEY SAID/THEY LIED PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS

The audiovisual teaching aids accompanying the Educator's Guide includes 17

They Said/They Lied public service announcements. Each of these emotional and action-packed PSAs portrays a real-life scenario.

Show the PSA for each drug at the start of the lesson on that drug. Students will ask to see them again and again, so be prepared to schedule other times when they may be viewed. Playing time: The PSAs are 30, 45 or 60 seconds in length; total running time of all 17 PSAs is 12 minutes.

USE OF THE TRUTH ABOUT DRUGS DOCUMENTARY DVD

Packed with interviews of former users who candidly talk about how their addiction destroyed their families, health and relationships, this documentary is an effective deterrent to drug experimentation. It is designed to counteract the peer pressure that is a critical factor in turning many kids on to drugs. Each chapter covers a commonly abused substance, explaining how the drug is made and used. The film details how young people are introduced to the drug and become addicted, with consequent damage to their health and negative effects on every aspect of their lives.

The Truth About Drugs documentary DVD included in your Educator's Package has a special educator's portal, with a menu feature allowing you to play the They Said/They Lied public service announcements and documentary chapters in the same sequence as the lessons.

Due to the mature content in some sections of this documentary it is not recommended for children under 10.

Elke module zou over het algemeen tussen de dertig en veertig minuten trainingstijd moeten duren, hoewel sommige extra tijd nodig kunnen hebben om alle discassies en praktische opdrachten te dekken. Elke trainingsmodule heeft een verwachte implementatietijd vermeld. Er zijn verschillende manieren om het trainingsprogramma te implementeren. Je kunt een weekend of een tweedaagse workshop voor werknemers houden en het hele programma doen of een of meer trainingsmodules per dag doen of de modules op verschillende tijdstippen plannen over een periode van dagen of weken.
Als onderdeel van je voorbereiding zul je het nuttig vinden om de literatuur te lezen en grondig te begrijpen, de woordenlijst achteraan deze gids te lezen en te kijken

 

Verwarring of onvermogen om te begrijpen of te leren komt NA een woord dat de persoon niet had gedefinieerd en begrepen. Het zijn misschien niet alleen de nieuwe en ongebruikelijke woorden die uw deelnemers moeten opzoeken. Sommige veelgebruikte woorden kunnen vaak verkeerd worden gedefinieerd en dus verwarring veroorzaken.
Verkeerd begrepen en onbegrepen woorden bleken aan de bodem te zitten van een meerderheid van de moeilijkheden van een persoon bij het bestuderen en leren van een onderwerp.
Daarom moet je bij het gebruik van het boek en de film The Way to Happiness er zeker van zijn dat deelnemers de gebruikte woorden volledig begrijpen.
Als het materiaal verwarrend voor hen wordt of ze het niet kunnen begrijpen, ga dan terug naar VOORDAT ze in de war raakten en je zult een verkeerd begrepen woord vinden dat kan worden opgezocht en gedefinieerd.
Moedig deelnemers aan om de betekenis op te zoeken van woorden die ze niet begrijpen.
Een groter begrip en toepassing van materiaal zal resulteren.
AANPAK VAN TRAINING
Hier zijn enkele specifieke bewezen richtlijnen die u kunt gebruiken bij het implementeren van The Way to Happiness Common Sense Values for the Workplace-programma:
• Omdat mensen worden getroffen door het slechte gedrag van anderen om hen heen, waardoor hun productiviteit en welvaart worden verminderd, is het belangrijk dat The Way to Happiness aan mensen wordt aangeboden voor gebruik met degenen die hun leven beïnvloeden.
• De weg naar geluk moet worden onderwezen op een manier die er niet voor zorgt dat anderen het gevoel hebben dat ze worden "gepredikt" of verteld wat ze moeten denken of doen. Waarden zijn een persoonlijke keuze en kunnen niet worden afgedwongen. Deze trainingsmodules stellen u in staat om het begrip en de toepassing van de materialen te bevorderen in plaats van ze te presenteren met een autoritaire" benadering.
Het doel is niet om deze ideeën aan mensen op te dringen, maar om het hen mogelijk te maken om omstandigheden te inspecteren en te zien hoe ze de voorschriften kunnen gebruiken om zichzelf en anderen te helpen.
• De meeste mensen worden onderworpen aan een veelvoud aan gemengde berichten over wat goed en fout is en kunnen zich onder druk gezet voelen "omdat anderen het doen". Bijgevolg kunnen ze mentaal "vastlopen" en onzeker zijn over hoe ze wat ze hebben geleerd in actie kunnen brengen.
Een remedie hiervoor wordt gepresenteerd in de tekst van De Weg naar Geluk, onder Voorschrift 17, "Wees Competent". Zoals vermeld in Sectie 17-2, "Leren":


"Het belangrijkste leerproces bestaat uit het inspecteren van de beschikbare gegevens, het selecteren van het ware uit het valse, het belangrijke uit het onbelangrijke en het komen tot conclusies die men maakt en kan toepassen."
Het is belangrijk dat discussies en opdrachten zijn ontworpen om deelnemers aan te moedigen dingen te onderzoeken en tot hun eigen conclusies te komen.
Train anderen altijd stap voor stap. Dit staat bekend als een gradiëntbenadering van leren. Neem de tijd die iemand nodig heeft om dingen stap voor stap te begrijpen. Ze de woorden laten begrijpen, voorbeelden laten bedenken met betrekking tot een concept en hoe het al dan niet van toepassing kan zijn op hen of op anderen, zal meestal hun verwarringen ophelderen.

De persoon die het boek heeft ontvangen, kan op zijn beurt kopieën geven aan mensen die betrokken zijn bij zijn leven en hen vragen het te lezen. En wanneer ze iemand zien die in de problemen zit of een probleem in het leven heeft, kunnen ze hem een exemplaar van The Way to Happiness geven en hen vertellen het te lezen en te gebruiken om iemand anders te helpen. Zo verspreidt de positieve invloed zich.
Het boek was niet geschreven om aan iemand te worden gegeven met instructies of "smeekbeden" om moreel te worden of om "hun gedrag te verbeteren". Men kan vaak in de verleiding komen om te prediken of te eisen dat anderen meer moreel zijn. Dat is niet het doel van dit boek.
De mens is te vaak bekritiseerd omdat hij immoreel is zonder eerst de gezond verstand te leren waarom en hem een gids te geven om te volgen. De weg naar geluk is ontworpen om iemand te helpen door hem het boek te laten lezen en het vervolgens te gebruiken om te helpen

"SOMETHING CAN BE DONE ABOUT IT." This is the motto of every Scientology Volunteer Minister, whether in helping a neighbor in the local community or answering the call of a nation on the other side of the world after a tragic disaster.

The Volunteer Minister Program was created in the mid-1970s by Scientology Founder

L. Ron Hubbard to bring succor to those in need, wherever and whenever the call might come. The program has grown to now constitute one of the largest and most visible international independent relief forces.

The mandate of the Volunteer Minister is to be "a person who helps his fellow man on a volunteer basis by restoring purpose, truth and spiritual values to the lives of others."  THE FIREMEN, POLICE AND EMERGENCY relief teams who rushed to the twisted, smoking ruins of the World Trade Center on Tuesday, September 11, 2001, it was like walking into the lower rings of the Inferno. Without regard for the suffocating heat, smoke and white ash, they were driven to find survivors.

Within hours of the fall of the towers came the first team of Volunteer Ministers, providing assistance and relief to rescue workers who were shocked and grieving over the hundreds of casualties in their ranks.

"It was all about helping and that is what we did," said a member of the Volunteer Minister team. "There was this unspoken feeling of brotherhood out there, this ray of compassion in the middle of such overwhelming destruction. We all needed each other, and everyone just started working, finding anything that needed to be done and doing it."

The Volunteer Ministers went to work supplying the rescue workers with anything they requested, and much more. They took over administrative and organizational tasks; located vital equipment and supplies, no matter how scarce or impossible to find; and they provided food, water, coffee and respite at the "Freedom Café," a makeshift diner built, supplied and staffed 24/7 by Volunteer Ministers.

Above all, the Volunteer Ministers gave Scientology assists to the crews, relieving the exhaustion and shock from the recovery work and the personal loss of family, friends and  word spread of the remarkable results of assists, dozens of social workers and grief counselors were trained at the Church of Scientology of New York and joined the teams at Ground Zero.

Volunteer Ministers from across the United States, Canada and other countries kept coming, with more than 800 serving throughout the next nine months. Their work proved so visibly effective that emergency services personnel asked them to remain and continue their assistance at the site long after other volunteer groups had left.

The tragedy of September 11 pointed up the vital need for Volunteer Ministers in a troubled society.

At that time, some 6,000 individuals had trained and earned the right to wear the signature yellow T-shirt.

Today, more than 250,000 individuals worldwide are trained in the Scientology tools of Volunteer Ministers, reaching out and bringing effective help to others.

WHEN A 7.8 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE struck Nepal, it hit just 50 miles northeast of the capital city of Kathmandu. It destroyed more than half a million houses and left two million people homeless. All told, the earthquake caused more than 9,000 fatalities in Nepal and injured 21,000 more, making it the deadliest in the country's history.

To compound the problem, the quake fractured water pipes, contaminating drinking water. Continuing aftershocks sent waves of hysterical people running into the streets. Fearful of another major quake, thousands slept outdoors with the homeless, despite having houses to stay in.

Going into disaster response mode, local Volunteer Ministers mobilized under the leadership of Binod Sharma, a Nepali.

Working alongside the local Armed Police Force, he and his team first helped rescue people from collapsed buildings.

They then distributed food, water and tarps to the growing number of people sleeping in the streets and in the 58 displacement camps that had sprung up in and around Kathmandu.

Almost 8,000 miles away in Los Angeles, at the Scientology Volunteer Minister Headquarters, teams were working around the clock to organize logistics and fly in large teams of Volunteer Ministers and disaster response specialists from around the world.

The first to arrive were Volunteer Minister teams from Pakistan, India and Thailand, including doctors, nurses and paramedics - vitally needed as Nepalese hospital

lines of critically injured people.

Next to deploy were handpicked teams of international Volunteer Ministers from Colombia, the United States, Australia and across Europe.

They were joined by two professional disaster response teams operating under the Volunteer

Ministers' umbrella: the famed Los Topos (The Moles) search and rescue team from Mexico and a CINAT (National Circle of Aid Technicians)

team from Colombia, a disaster response organization specializing in emergency medical care.

Working together, the combined Volunteer Minister force rescued 130 victims from collapsed buildings; provided emergency care to more than 1,200; helped countless more with food, water and shelter; and rebuilt more than 300 schools, shelters and homes.

WHEN JAPAN'S LARGEST ISLAND.

Honshu, was hit by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake just off the northeastern coast, the island moved nearly eight feet eastward and the Earth shifted on its axis by some 6.5 inches. The quake also triggered a three-story-high wall of water that swept across the 1,300-mile coastline, washing away 20 cities and numerous towns and villages, and driving buildings, ships, cars and trains miles inland.

Nearly 20,000 people lost their lives and 600,000 were left homeless. A total of

4.4 million homes were without electricity and another million without water.

Fukushima nuclear power plant was damaged by the quake and flooding, forcing evacuation of tens of thousands of residents in a 30-mile radius.

Within hours, Volunteer Ministers, one of the few volunteer organizations permitted in the disaster zone, immediately went to work on the highest priority: directing people to the 2,400 shelters that had been set up in schools and distributing any available food, water and medical supplies.

Simple actions that helped save lives.

Concurrently, Volunteer Ministers in Tokyo organized donations of food and blankets and transported them into the devastated area by any available means, while Volunteer Ministers in other parts of Japan were mobilized to the disaster zone. The call also went out worldwide to highly trained Volunteer Ministers and professional rescue specialists, including 17 of Mexico's elite Los Topos search and rescue team. specialties, Los Topos became an integral part of the disaster response.

Within days, volunteers from Australia, Canada, Taiwan, Spain, Britain and the United States arrived and joined Japanese teams, helping in myriad ways.

Volunteer Ministers continuously gave spiritual aid in the form of assists to people of all ages

in the centers, relieving them of the physical and emotional distress brought about by the disaster. Within two weeks, more than 10,000 survivors had received one-on-one help.

At the same time, more than 1,500 volunteers from other relief organizations, community groups and schools were trained in Volunteer Minister techniques.

WHEN MASSIVE FLOODS STRUCK the Indus River Basin, it was Pakistan's worst natural disaster in memory.

A heavy monsoon period caused the Indus to overflow, until nearly one-fifth of the country was underwater. The monsoons claimed 1,700 lives and more than 14 million were forced to flee their homes.

With entry into the country difficult for volunteers from other nations, Pakistani Volunteer Disaster Relief mobilized from within to deliver aid in various regions— Islamabad in the north, Karachi in the south and Khushab in the central region.

With most roads flooded and impassable, the teams first rescued families stranded in remote encampments. Volunteers reached them with local boats and waded through chest-high water to deliver supplies.

They brought food, water, clothing and emergency supplies, and provided assists to the traumatized.

In yet another area, Volunteer Disaster Relief teamed up with a Pakistani army unit, a team of doctors and a well-known nongovernmental organization. They distributed much-needed food, water and medicine to thousands living in remote refugee camps, teaching their leaders assists and organizing the camps. The team delivered thousands of assists and trained more than 1,800 others to do the same.

"Flood victims really need someone who can listen to them and their problems, and the Disaster Relief Team is doing that," wrote an official from the Sindh High Court. "This is appreciated."

PHOENIX HERRIJST: GROOTSE OPENING VAN HISTORISCH MONUMENT WAAR DIANETICS & SCIENTOLOGY WERDEN VERENIGD

De net ingewijde L. Ron Hubbard Historische Locatie is een aandenken aan de eenmaking van Dianetics en Scientology – en een bewijs van een transformerend tijdperk.

Een bescheiden woning uit het midden van de vorige eeuw op East Osborn Road 4451 in Phoenix werd ooit door L. Ron Hubbard beschreven als “een mooie plek, midden in een citrusboomgaard”. Maar voor de mensen van Phoenix (en in feite voor Scientologists wereldwijd) is het zoveel meer geworden dan dat.

 
Terwijl het gejuich losbarst en serpentines door de lucht schieten, wordt de locatie aan Osborn Road formeel ingewijd – vereeuwigd als de plaats waar twee paden samenkwamen en een nieuw hoofdstuk in de geschiedenis van Scientology begon.

Op een woestijnwarme zaterdagavond werd dat historische gebouw opnieuw geopend, herboren als een L. Ron Hubbard Historische Locatie. Op deze locatie, een locatie van internationaal belang, “veranderde de toekomst voor altijd”, zei de Erfgoedbeerder van de Scientology Kerk, die de ceremonie leidde en toezicht had gehouden op de historische restauratie van de locatie.

De “verandering voor altijd” waarnaar werd verwezen, was dat L. Ron Hubbard (LRH) hier niet alleen Dianetics 55! publiceerde, maar ook het werk voltooide dat leidde tot het legendarische Eenmaking Congres, dat zo’n tien kilometer verderop in het Phoenix Little Theatre werd gehouden. Daar verklaarde meneer Hubbard dat voor het eerst ooit twee onderwerpen (Dianetics en Scientology) zouden worden verenigd. Dat congres werd een gebeurtenis waarover in de Journal of Scientology onmiddellijk werd geschreven: “Het belangrijkste dat ooit in Dianetics en Scientology is gebeurd.”

In 1954 was Phoenix het centrum van het Scientology universum geworden. Het was de thuisbasis van de Hubbard Association of Scientologists International (HASI) – gevestigd in zeven panden in het hart van de binnenstad van Phoenix.

Nu, zo’n 70 jaar later, is de locatie aan Osborn Road een parel van design uit het midden van de vorige eeuw en een Scientology erfgoed, gerestaureerd tot precies zoals het eruitzag toen meneer Hubbard daar woonde en werkte. De originele elementen van de woning, gebouwd in prairiestijl en met invloeden van het modernisme, zijn teruggebracht naar hoe ze ooit waren, inclusief de steunbalken van een spoorwegviaduct, stalen patrijspoorten en de met de hand vervaardigde esdoornhouten kasten. Zelfs het druppelvormige zwembad en de waterval fonkelen nu in hun oorspronkelijke pracht uit het midden van de jaren vijftig.

Vandaag verzamelde zich een publiek van Scientologists, prominenten uit de gemeenschap en historici op Osborn Road bij een ondergaande zon om een glorieuze openingsceremonie te vieren, waarmee de gerestaureerde Historische Locatie werd geopend. Binnen kregen ze de kans om zeldzame artefacten uit de geschiedenis te zien. Bezoekers konden het originele bureau van meneer Hubbard bekijken waaraan hij het baanbrekende werk Dianetics 55! had geschreven.

Er zijn ook persoonlijke voorwerpen te zien, zoals het Hammond S4 Akkoordorgel waar meneer Hubbard graag op speelde en zijn Coronado Stereomeubel dat de lucht vulde met walsen en jazz. Buiten staan zelfs de gletsjerblauwe Harley-Davidson Hydra-Glide en zijn Chevrolet Deluxe Station Wagon uit 1951 die in hun volledige vintageglorie werden hersteld.

Tijdens de openingsceremonie spraken de hoogwaardigheids­bekleders over de impact die meneer Hubbard op Phoenix, nu de vijfde grootste stad in de VS, heeft gehad. Gemeenteraadslid Kevin Robinson, een gepensioneerde politieagent met 36 jaar dienst, sprak vol trots. “Phoenix is een stad die niet alleen herrijst – ze herrijst keer op keer. Van oude kanalen die door onze native American voorouders zijn uitgehouwen tot de wijken van vandaag, dit is een plaats van vooruitgang. Phoenix is altijd een pioniersstad geweest, niet alleen geografisch, maar ook in de geest”, zei Robinson. “Vandaag beginnen we een nieuw hoofdstuk in de geschiedenis van deze stad. Dit is een prestatie van de gemeenschap, dus wil ik mijn dank uitspreken voor wat jullie voor deze buurt hebben gedaan, voor wat jullie voor onze stad hebben bereikt en voor het helpen om de geschiedenis weer tot leven te brengen.”

Meneer Stan Patton, een specialist in het restaureren van erfgoed met 40 jaar ervaring in het behouden van enkele van de meest gekoesterde monumenten van Arizona, sprak over zijn ongeëvenaarde passie voor het Osborn Road-project. “Wat hier op deze L. Ron Hubbard Historische Locatie is bereikt, is niet alleen de restauratie van een gebouw, het brengt een plaats en een moment uit het verleden terug. We waren vastbesloten om elk element, elk detail terug te brengen alsof meneer Hubbard zelf net de kamer was uitgelopen”, voegde Patton eraan toe, “en ik geloof dat dat is gelukt. In feite noem ik dit, van alle projecten die ik heb gedaan, de kroon op mijn levenswerk!”

John Jacquemart, die de Arizona Governor’s Heritage Award won voor zijn werk aan historische locaties, sprak over de blijvende nalatenschap van meneer Hubbard. “Ik heb mijn leven lang naar verhalen geluisterd als historicus en als geboren en getogen inwoner van Arizona. De verhalen die we hier vertellen, gaan over eenzame ruiters, lange schaduwen en wetteloze wegen. Maar het verhaal van L. Ron Hubbard? Dat is de meeslependste van allemaal. Terwijl deze stad floreerde, bracht meneer Hubbard een ander soort groei. Niet in land of hout, maar in ideeën. Zijn lezingen vulden onze meest iconische zalen met een honger naar kennis en een visie voor de geest en de ziel”, zei hij. “Dat verhaal is in het bezit van Phoenix en, vanaf vandaag, zal ze dat verhaal nooit loslaten!”

Dr. Albert Celoza is de algemeen directeur van de Arizona Interfaith Movement en ontving de Arizona Professor of the Year Award. “Mijlpalen voor één religie zijn mijlpalen voor ons allemaal. En je zou kunnen zeggen dat we hier in Phoenix op heilige Scientology grond staan. Het is immers de plek waar L. Ron Hubbard een waarheid verwoordde die door alle religies wordt gedeeld: dat de mens in wezen een spiritueel wezen is. Hier schreef hij ook het Credo van de Scientology Kerk”, zei dr. Celoza. “Dus ik zeg dit met overtuiging: als interreligieus leider, iemand die naast rabbijnen, imams, monniken, priesters en predikanten heeft gestaan, eer ik L. Ron Hubbard voor zijn bijdrage aan mensen van alle religies!”

Deze nieuwste L. Ron Hubbard Historische Locatie is de tweede in Phoenix. Op slechts drie kilometer ervandaan bevindt zich een andere locatie aan de voet van Camelback Mountain. Die werd in 2005 geopend en is vandaag de dag officieel erkend en opgenomen in het Nationale Register van Historische Plekken.

Alles bij elkaar zijn er nu acht van dergelijke Historische Locaties op drie continenten geopend, waaronder: Bay Head, New Jersey, waar LRH Dianetics schreef, het bestverkochte boek ooit over het menselijk verstand; Elizabeth, New Jersey, waar hij de eerste Dianetics Foundation oprichtte; de Founding Church die meneer Hubbard in Washington, DC, oprichtte; het oorspronkelijke Hubbard Communications Office aan Fitzroy Street in Londen, Engeland; zijn verblijf Linksfield Ridgemet uitzicht op Johannesburg, Zuid-Afrika; en zijn hoofdkwartier in Saint Hill in East Grinstead, Engeland.

Elke Historische Locatie biedt een letterlijke en visuele geschiedenis van het werk en de vooruitgang die meneer Hubbard bereikte in de tijd dat hij zich op die specifieke locatie bevond. Elke locatie heeft ook een kamer die gewijd is aan het bredere verhaal van meneer Hubbard’s leven, dat in het teken stond van wereldwijde verkenning en research – waaronder zijn doorslaggevende prestaties hier in Phoenix, Arizona. Alles bij elkaar tonen de locaties meneer Hubbard’s stapsgewijze pad naar het stichten van Dianetics en Scientology.

De volgende Historische Locatie zal deze zomer in Zuidelijk Afrika worden geopend – waarmee de nalatenschap van het werk van meneer Hubbard wordt voortgezet.
